There is no better way to explore and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Southern Texas than a river float. Forget about rushing from tourist trap to tourist trap; aren’t vacations supposed to be relaxing? There are seven simple things you can do to prepare for your float to get the maximum joy out of a day in the warm sun and cool waters.
1. Dress Appropriately
Most people are comfortable wearing normal swimwear with a layer on top, such as a rash guard shirt and a pair of water resistant shorts. Normal street clothing will be uncomfortable once it gets wet–and you absolutely will be getting wet. In addition, you should wear footwear that is meant for water sports, such as sandals or swim shoes. The bottoms of rivers are often rocky and can hurt your feet. Normal water footwear choices such as a flip flops are a bad idea, as they are easily lost.
2. Protect Yourself from the Sun
The sun in Canyon Lake and other areas of Southern Texas can be relentless. Wear plenty of sunscreen and reapply periodically during the day. Consider wearing a top that covers your back and arms. Bring a hat and sunglasses as well. These measures are especially important for children, who are more sensitive to the sun.

Children, as well as adults who are not experienced swimmers, should wear life vests whether floating or doing any other water activity. In addition, you should bring rope to connect the tubes; keeping the group together will make for a safer and more enjoyable river float. You would be surprised at how thirsty you can get even when surrounded by water! Bring lots of bottled water for your float. In addition, some portable and easy to eat snacks will keep you from getting hungry. We suggest granola bars, dried fruit, and other simple, healthy, and filling snacks. If you wish to bring something more substantial, keep it in a cooler so it does not spoil in the heat.
5. Consider a Waterproof Camera
There are many fun times and beautiful sights to be recorded while on a river float. However, too many people have ruined expensive cameras and smartphones. If you want to document your trip, bring a waterproof camera. There are many affordable and even disposable ones. Nothing ruins a fun day like breaking or losing an expensive device.
6. Choose Alcohol in Cans
Having a beer or your choice of libation on the river is a classic Texan pastime. However, no one wants to step on glass, so bring your drinks in cans. Please do not bring any kind of glass item to your river float, for your own safety and that of others.
7. Pack a Cooler
It gets hot in the Texas sun, so you will want to bring a cooler with plenty of ice to keep your drinks and food cold. In addition, many people like to put their valuables in a
